A Medivet Healthcare Plan for cats and kittens covers all the routine healthcare your pet needs throughout the year. Kittens receive the full vaccination course they need to build immunity, whilst adult and senior cats receive annual boosters to maintain protection.

Cat Healthcare Plan vs Pet Insurance

Many cat owners wonder whether they need a Healthcare Plan, pet insurance, or both. The answer depends on what type of care you want to cover.

Medivet Healthcare Plans:

Pet Insurance:

If you only had insurance and no Healthcare Plan, you would still need to pay separately for annual vaccinations, flea and worm treatments, health checks, and microchipping. These costs add up quickly, often exceeding the annual cost of a Healthcare Plan.

Vaccinations and Boosters for Cats

What they protect against: Cat vaccinations protect against serious and potentially fatal diseases, including feline infectious enteritis, cat flu (caused by feline herpesvirus and feline calicivirus), and feline leukaemia virus.

Kitten vaccinations: Kittens typically receive their first vaccination at around 8-9 weeks of age, with a second dose given 3-4 weeks later. Some kittens may require a third dose depending on their age and vaccination history. All kitten vaccination courses are included in the Medivet Healthcare Plan.

Adult and senior cats: Relevant booster vaccinations are necessary to maintain your cat's immunity. Without regular boosters, your cat's protection against these diseases will decline, leaving them vulnerable to infection. The cost of treating diseases like cat flu or feline infectious enteritis far exceeds the cost of annual vaccination.

Regular Health Checks for Cats

Cat and Kitten Microchipping

Since June 2024, microchipping has been a legal requirement for all cats over 20 weeks old in England. A microchip is a permanent form of identification that dramatically increases the chances of reuniting you with your cat if they go missing.

Cats are curious explorers, and even indoor cats can sometimes slip outside. If your cat gets lost, a microchip provides a direct link back to you. Vets, rescue centres, and local authorities routinely scan found cats for microchips.

What's involved: Microchipping is a quick, simple procedure that can be done during a routine appointment. A tiny chip (about the size of a grain of rice) is implanted under the skin between your cat's shoulder blades. It's no more uncomfortable than a standard vaccination.
