Meet our Partner, Brian Murray

I was born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica and graduated from the University of the West Indies in 2008. I was introduced to animals from an early age on my family's farm, where I grew to appreciate farm animals and later volunteered at various clinics in my high school years. I've worked throughout the Caribbean but moved to the UK to pursue a certification in Diagnostic Imaging. When I’m not working I enjoy swimming, scuba diving, martial arts, and working the barbecue grill.

I had the worst experience I’ve ever had with this practice. My dog was taken in because he wasn’t well, and we weren’t sure what was wrong. They found a tick on him, which, from my own research, could have been the cause of his illness and may have only required antibiotics. Instead of clearly explaining the situation, they said they wanted to carry out more tests. The consultation room door was closed, and nothing was properly discussed with us. My girlfriend was there at the time, and she wasn’t given a clear explanation of what they planned to do or how much it would cost. I arrived straight from work, already stressed after hearing my dog was unwell, only to be told I owed £750 for what felt like very little. I was then told they wanted to keep my dog overnight at an additional cost of around £1,000. I refused because I wanted to get a second opinion and take my dog elsewhere. They gave us enough medication for two days and asked me to sign a release form. When I read it, it stated that if my dog wasn’t seen by another vet within 24 hours, they could contact the RSPCA and the police to have him collected. I found this intimidating and completely unnecessary, especially as I had already made it clear I was seeking another veterinary opinion immediately. The following day I took my dog to Olive Tree Vets. They requested the scan images from your practice, so I called to ask for them to be sent over. I was told they couldn’t send them until the end of the day. In my opinion, if a dog is unwell and another vet needs those records to continue treatment, delaying them is unacceptable. It was only after I said I would drive to the practice and collect them myself that they were sent across. Olive Tree Vets were excellent. They kept my dog for around eight hours, carried out blood tests, put him on an IV drip, provided a week’s worth of medication to take home, and treated him with care throughout the day. They charged a fraction of what I had been quoted previously, and my dog came home like a completely different dog. Based on my experience, I believe the charges were excessive, the communication was poor, and the overall level of service fell well below what I expected. I would also like to see the relevant certifications and training records of the staff involved in my dog’s care, as I have serious concerns about how this case was handled. I will be taking this matter further because I do not want anyone else or their pet to go through the same experience.

The vet used his common sense, rather than opting straight away for expensive tests. He was kind, considerate and patient
