Our Charity Partnership with the Wilderness Foundation
For over nine years, Medivet has supported the Wilderness Foundation, a charity that among many other endeavours, works tirelessly to protect the endangered rhino in the Eastern Cape of South Africa.
Throughout this time, we have partnered with world renowned wildlife vet, and former Medivet vet, Dr William Fowlds to help combat the poaching crisis, providing much needed funds that have helped enable multiple aspects of the charity’s work including anti-poaching initiatives, establishing new rhino populations, the conservation and protection of suitable rhino habitat and vital education work with local communities.
Excitingly, we have now expanded our partnership with The Wilderness Foundation in support of their commitment to ‘One Health’. The Wilderness Foundation’s influence now stretches from the wild rhino reserves of the Eastern Cape of South Africa, to the healing woodlands of the UK countryside - all united under the umbrella of protecting our wilderness as sanctuaries to care, protect and heal for the benefit of animals, people and planet.
In addition, our partnership supports critical work in South-East Asia focused on reducing the demand for rhino horn through education and awareness initiatives.
The vital work that our donations support
Animals
For over 50 years, Wilderness Foundation Africa has worked to create safe strongholds for rhino and other indigenous species.
Forever Wild Rhino Protection Initiative is Wilderness Foundation Africa’s response to the rhino poaching crisis and is dedicated to anti-poaching, rhino horn demand reduction, the establishment of new rhino populations and the conservation and protection of suitable rhino habitat.
In the Eastern Cape, their collaborative programme spans 800 000 hectares of protected habitats with ambitious plans to double these areas.
People
Engaging over 8000 people per year, the Wilderness Foundation UK harnesses nature and wilderness experiences to create positive change and improved mental health for disadvantaged and vulnerable children, teens and adults.
In return, their work encourages people to care for nature through environmental education.
The Foundation team is proud of their commitment to nature- based therapy programmes, such as their “Out There” programme, supporting young people aged 11-15 struggling with school, behavioural issues and emotional resilience; the “Blossom Project”, a domestic abuse therapy programme for adult, children and teen survivors, and “Brave Futures”, a group therapy programme for people who have experienced grief, trauma, social isolation, anxiety and depression.
Planet
Uniting everything the Wilderness Foundation undertakes for our animals and people, is its protection, restoration and management of bio-diverse wilderness and wildlands. Its programmes and partnerships are focused on establishing connected corridors between protected areas, and reclaiming, re-wilding and restoring natural habitats to allow nature to flourish.
Working with local communities and through its “Wild Schools” nature and climate change programme, Wilderness Foundation is educating and engaging people to promote and protect biodiversity for current and future generations.
Our donations are needed more than ever
- Every day a rhino is still killed in South Africa for its horn
- 1 in 6 people in England aged 16+ have experienced symptoms of a common mental health problem, such as depression or anxiety
- In the last thirty years, 10% of the earth's wilderness has been lost due to human activity resulting in up to 40% of the world’s insect species being at risk of extinction
Over the last nine years our donations have helped:
Treat over 50 rhinos attacked by poachers are well as orphaned rhinos | Provide rabies vaccines for over 2000 dogs in local communities |
Fund 2 tracker dogs over a 7-year period supporting the reduction in the number of rhinos killed | Provide flea, tick and worming for nearly 1000 dogs in local communities |
Contribute towards the running and maintenance of specialised anti-poaching planes | Spay and neuter over 100 dogs to support population control and reduce the spread of disease |
With animal welfare at the heart of everything we do at Medivet, your contributions to support the work of Wilderness Foundation will provide us with an incredible opportunity to have a positive impact on a global scale. You can donate to our fundraiser below.
