Medivet Unveils Graduate Development Plans for 2019

Medivet is launching a unique Graduate Development Programme which supports newly qualified vets with extensive 1-2-1 in-practice training.

The comprehensive programme, which starts in August, is designed to deliver tailored coaching and training with experienced vets and will see graduates working off rota, side by side with their mentors in practice for twelve weeks of the year-long course.

The scheme, devised by Medivet’s Head of Vet Development & Future Vet Recruitment, Dr Daniel Preter, includes 17 modules of key clinical and non-clinical subjects including surgery, dentistry, dermatology, ophthalmology, ultrasound, cardiology and exotics as well as mental health, leadership and resilience.

“Graduates will be matched with a dedicated clinician who will be their first point of contact for advice, both clinical and non-clinical,” said Daniel, who is also a Medivet Senior Partner.

“We are passionate about attracting the best new vets into the Medivet Group and offering them the support, guidance and training they need to make the challenging transition from university to consulting room. Our new training programme will help them both to develop the practical, clinical and communication skills essential in day to day practice and to start to build their knowledge of more specialised areas.

“As important as the clinical training is, we also place a strong emphasis on the wellbeing of our new graduates. In addition to our new graduate programme, we have a mentoring initiative to ensure our graduates are fully supported by an experienced ‘buddy’ for the duration of the programme. Graduates and buddies meet regularly for pulse-checks to discuss ongoing support and advice on clinical and no-clinical matters.

“We believe this new programme will help our graduates to grow in confidence quickly and to develop the clinical and professional skills they need in order to build a fulfilling and rewarding veterinary career.”

There will be seven separate start dates available over the course of the year across multiple locations throughout the UK.

At the end of the Medivet Graduate Development Programme, graduates will have completed over 120 hours of CPD in the first year. They will also receive:

  • RCVS fees and the first year of BSAVA membership
  • VDS cover and BVA membership
  • Five weeks' annual holiday plus Bank Holidays
  • MiniVetGuide book for quick clinical reference
