Veterinary Care Assistant

I joined Medivet in late 2023 as a Client Care Assistant and I quickly worked my way up to a Veterinary Care Assistant. I’m hoping to work my way up to a student vet nurse in the future and I have also achieved a Degree in Animal Biology. I have a Maine Coon cat called Saphina and numerous aquariums and my hobbies include reading and going to gigs.

She has a particular interest in animal welfare, anaesthesia and emergency nursing. In her spare time she enjoys renovating her first property, horse riding and spending time with her partner. At home they share Doberman Stanley, and two naughty rescue cats Percy and Athea.

I started employment in 1995 shortly after the practice opened and over the years my role developed from nursing/admin into a management role at the surgery. Outside of this busy job I enjoy my passions of gardening and interior design and walking my wonderful little Spaniel who is in the practice every day and probably needs her own bio!

Such a lovely experience from start to finish. The vet was so kind and thorough when checking my cat over and made us both feel completely at ease. Her vaccinations were given so quickly and gently that she didn’t even flinch! I was also given some really helpful advice about her health. The receptionist was equally friendly, welcoming and efficient. Thank you to everyone for taking such good care of my cat — we really appreciated it!

We recently attended medivet as a new client. I filled out the registration form online including details of our old vet surgery and booked a free initial consultation. When we attended the appointment I made the vet aware of an existing prescription for my dogs skin condition and asked if it would be possible for her to continue prescribing this, as our new vet. She was very reluctant to do this, I am not sure why. I had bought evidence of the last prescription and provided details of our previous vets to check against. The vet would not agree to prescribe at the appointment and advised me that she would “look into it” and call me back either later that day, or the following day. When I went to leave the surgery I was asked to pay for the appointment by the receptionist despite this being advertised as a free consultation. I was able to raise this with the receptionist and I did not end up paying for the appointment, but it was an awkward conversation and the receptionist made a phone call in front of me to someone stating that she was not aware of the current promotions and made her annoyance at this very clear. I also explained to this lady that the vet was planning to read the notes from our previous vet and call me back, the receptionist very dismissively told me that those notes would not have even been requested yet. The vet did not call me back as I had been informed. A few days after our appointment I had to call them to chase. I spoke to a very lovely staff member who advised me that she would put my prescription request on the list as urgent but also told me that it was unlikely that this would be sorted within the day as they were short staffed. I explained that my dog had now ran out of medication and I was worried about her skin deteriorating. She also informed me that they would not be able to source this medication for me (zenrelia) and that they would only be able to provide a written prescription, I would have to order the medication myself from a pet pharmacy. More days passed without any communication so I called to chase again as my dog’s skin was now itchy, inflamed and becoming swollen in areas. I spoke to the same staff member who seemed confused that my request had not yet been completed, she again told me she would put it on the urgent list for the day. I raised my concerns about the treatment so far, which I very rarely do and asked if this was common practice. As a new client I wanted to know if this was standard for medivet, she told me that it wasn’t but they’d been having staffing difficulties. I was asked to pay upfront for the prescription cost at this point however I declined and instead said I would pay once the prescription had been issued as I had already been waiting over a week for it to be done. Less than an hour later she called me back to say that the prescription had been written and to take payment. I then had to purchase the medication myself from an online pet pharmacy. All in all it took me 2 weeks of chasing to get a simple routine prescription for my dog. I will not be returning to medivet. This experience has not left me with any confidence that if I had a sudden health concern for my dog that medivet would be able to respond with any urgency. I have never left a review for anything before however I have received 3 emails from medivet asking for feedback. I have also come across some information online that medivet as a wider organisation are being investigated due to the number of veterinary surgeries they have purchase in such a short period of time, and concerns that this means that they cannot provide adequate treatment to animals in their care. I unfortunately would have to agree that this has been my experience with them, and I am thankful that this was a routine prescription request and not a serious health concern for my pet.
