Lead Veterinary Surgeon

Debra Richardson

Lead Veterinary Surgeon

I moved to the UK from Australia (with my terrier in tow!) in 2004 and after a career in customer insight, market research and communications in Australia and the UK I was able to revisit a childhood dream of becoming a vet. I studied with the Royal Veterinary College undertaking both their BSc in Veterinary Sciences and Veterinary Medicine degrees. My mission is to provide the best veterinary care to my patients by helping their humans understand the 'magic' that happens in veterinary diagnostics and treatments. I believe strongly in communicating effectively with clients so that we can develop the most appropriate plan for their pet's care. I joined Medivet Redbourn in November 2021 as Lead Vet. My spare time is taken up with my pack of three terriers and my family, and hobbies including traveling, gardening and photography.

I graduated as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Košice, Slovakia in July 2017. Before this I gained a BSc Zoology degree from the University of Nottingham. I joined Medivet in 2017. I enjoy working with exotic pets, especially rabbits and birds. I'm also interested in wound management which was the topic of my diploma thesis at university. At home I have three cats called Charlie, Josie and Sheldon, and two rabbits called Ruby and Willow. Outside of work I enjoy crafts such as knitting and relaxing with a good book. I also love to travel when I get the chance.

My main experience before coming into veterinary nursing was animal rescue and rehabilitation. I was lucky that my jobs took me to amazing places across the world and worked with Elephants, Sea turtles, Monkeys and orangutans. I moved into veterinary almost 3 years ago and now in my final year the nursing diploma where my main interest is exotic species. At home I run a wildlife rehabilitation sanctuary and have a small zoo that includes 2 dogs, a parakeet, tortoise and snake.

Prior to joining Medivet, I completed a foundation degree in Animal Behaviour and Welfare at Berkshire College of Agriculture in 2019. I started working at Medivet in December 2020 as a Patient Care Assistant and became permanent at Redbourn Priory in June 2021. I started my training as a Student Veterinary Nurse in January 2022 and have a keen interest in our furry feline friends. I love building great relationships with our clients and their pets. At home, I enjoy creative hobbies such as drawing and painting.
